It's 3:00 A.M. and you know you should be asleep, but you aren't. If you are sick of hearing the clock tick away, try one of these remedies to sleep like a baby.
Getting a good night's sleep is the single best thing you can do to refresh your body. But so many people don't sleep at night. With the tips below, most people should be able to fall asleep and enjoy a restful night. Keep A JournalOne of the biggest reasons people have trouble sleeping is that they have something on their mind that they cannot let go. Writing everything out can relieve stress and let the day's issues go to ensure a restful night's sleep. Skip Television Before BedEver noticed how violent and intense the adult shows that are shown just before bed can be? Consider what watching these shows does to the body: increases heart rate, stimulates adrenalin release and often a mild fight or flight response when a character's plight becomes our own and overall causes a stimulating effect to the body. And all this occurs right before we get into bed. Is it any wonder people have insomnia? If these type of shows are too attractive to stop watching, consider recording them to watch earlier the next evening. Avoiding stressful activities just before bed can cause the body to more fully relax so sleep comes quickly and completely. In fact, not having a television in the bedroom can promote better sleep because the temptation to fall asleep with it on (or to stay awake all night and watch) is eliminated and not having a television in the bedroom can also enhance the intimacy of the room. Avoid Conflict Before BedWe all have stress and conflict in our lives sometimes, but it is possible not to engage in stressful conversations or conflict-laden activities just before bed. Take a message and call the person back the next day just after dinner or re-schedule an activity that may cause conflict to a time that is not just before bedtime. This tip alone can create a wonderful evening's rest if followed. Play Soothing MusicMusic can be very soothing, especially if it is instrumental, contains nature sounds or features sound waves. Consider playing a restful CD before bed to help your mind and body calm down and relax. Take A Hot BathA nice hot bath can do wonders for the body and soul. Warm water soothes tired muscles and refreshes the body just before bed by stimulating blood flow and creating a sense of calm and peace. Enjoy a hot bath tonight for a restful night. Try A Cervical PillowA cervical pillow containing two bumps (one large and one small) at each end with a dip in the middle and typically created out of memory foam will reduce neck tension and strain to promote a more relaxed body and thus a better night's sleep. Here is a great cervical pillow to try. When trying a new pillow, be sure to try it for at least two weeks to give the body time to adapt to it, and begin by using the smaller bump end under the neck (the larger end is typically only appropriate for very tall or largely built people). If traveling, consider taking along a travel cervical pillow or roll up a bath towel tightly to be used under the head for good support rather than a soft, puffy pillow that ultimately may strain delicate neck muscles. Consider A New MattressA mattress should be replaced about every ten years. Using an older mattress typically means that the body is receiving less support than it should and muscle strain and an inability to get comfortable may result. If your mattress is over ten years old, consider replacing it with a memory foam type that is more expensive than the average mattress but the cost is well worth the ability to sleep better. Try this mattress or a Select Comfort. To summarize, getting a good night's sleep is priceless. Try the tips above to stop insomnia and enjoy a restful night.
